left holding the bag 是相當古老的習慣用語,從1760年起就流傳了,但沒有確切出典,有一種猜測是這裏的bag可能是裝贓款贓物的袋子,同夥聽到了警報都走了,就剩拿着袋子的那個人被抓,人贓俱獲。現在這個短語的意思是:“替別人背黑鍋,或獨自承擔錯誤和罪責”。因此,當美國人說"He has been left holding the bag."時,他/她要表達的意思就是:"He has been made into a scapegoat."、"He has been unjustly blamed."、"He has been left to take full responsibility."。
