新概念4學習筆記：第13課 The Search for Oil

第一段語法符號詳解：
1. holes are made…, and they go down…
並列句，均爲主謂結構. 不過目前最深的洞是科拉超深鑽孔(Kola Superdeep Borehole)，深達地底 40,230 英尺. 10,000 英尺大概是 3,048 米.
2. we do not need to send men down…as we must…
複合句，主句爲主謂賓+賓補結構，as 引導的方式狀語從句爲主謂結構，該方式狀語從句省略了 send men down，相當於 we must send men down with other…
3. The holes are borings…
簡單句，主系表結構. 後面跟一個定語.
4. My particular experience is in oil, and the search for oil has done…
並列句，前句主系表結構，後句主謂結構. than 引導的比較狀語省略了謂語 has done， 即 than any other mining activity has done.
5. When…, we put up an oil derrick.
複合句，主句是主謂賓結構，重點在於 when 引導的時間狀語從句，從句裏面包含了一個 where 引導的主語從句，it 作形式主語. 主語從句中，we 爲主語，where 在這裏是引導詞，本身在從句中不能作爲主語，主語從句爲主謂結構.
6. It has to be tall because…and we have to lower into…and haul out of…which…
複合句，第一個 and 連接了前後兩個句子，前句爲主系表結構，加上一個 because 引導的原因狀語從句，該從句也是主系表結構.
第一個 and 後句爲並列結構，由第二個 and 進行連接，兩個都是主謂賓結構，其中第二個可以理解成 haul great lengths of drill pipe 和省略 haul 的 out of the ground，兩個賓語，其中 the ground 是 of 的介詞賓語.
which 引導的定語從句爲並列句，爲主謂結構. 這裏 pipe 用了單數，是因爲 of drillpipe 作定語修飾 lengths，後面 which 引導的定語從句按照主謂一致原則，跟隨 lengths 使用了 are.
第二段語法符號詳解：
1. The geologist needs to know what…, so a sample is obtained…
複合句，首句爲主謂+賓語從句結構. what 引導的賓語從句爲主謂結構.
so 後面這句爲主謂結構. core bit 在石油勘探領域的術語爲取心鑽頭，意思是鑽取岩心.
2. It cuts a clean cylinder of rock, from which…
複合句，主句爲主謂賓結構，後面是 from which 引導的定語從句，爲主謂結構，而在這個定語從句中，還有一個定語從句修飾 strata，爲主謂結構.
取心鑽頭鑽取岩心時，岩心立即形成與鑽頭體內徑相等或略小的岩心柱而進入內岩心筒並受到保護成形，這裏的 cylinder 應該講的就是成爲岩心柱，只不過科普文無需講得如此細緻.
3. Once…it flows to the surface because…
複合句，主句爲主謂結構，而前面有一個 once 引導的條件狀語從句，爲主謂賓結構，後面有一個 because 引導的原因狀語從句，爲主謂賓結構.
4. This pressure must be under control, and we control it…which…
複合句，and 分成前後兩句，前句爲主系表結構，後句主謂賓結構，包括一個 which 引導的定語從句修飾mud. 這裏的泥漿即鑽井液，鑽井液是用於鑽井的一種循環流體，初期進行旋轉鑽井時用清水，因地層中的泥質成分等而成爲渾濁的泥水，稱之爲泥漿. 現在基本上都稱爲鑽井液. [1]所以文中 circulate down 也只是一方面.
5. We endeavour to avoid the old, romantic idea of a gusher, which…
複合句，主句是主謂賓結構，which 引導的定語從句修飾 gusher，主謂賓結構.
6. We want it to stay down the hole until…
複合句，主句是主謂賓+賓補結構，until 引導時間狀語從句，爲主謂賓結構，其中lead off 動詞短語作謂語，作引出之意.
