實用口語:看美劇Gossip Girl學口語(18)

在這篇文章裏，我依舊注重了實用英語的介紹，幫助你們在工作和生活中更加簡潔地道地表達自己。想再次重申對是，雖然我介紹了大量的俚語，習語，並不表示我鼓勵你們花大量精力去學習。以我的經驗，正確又能讓人明白的簡明實用的英語是最重要的。在工作中，有時候掌握一些大詞也是非常關鍵的。還有一定的詞彙量和對於不同口音的熟悉對於你聽懂、看懂全世界各地非英語國家的稀奇古怪的英語也會大有裨益。而俚語和習語可以當成純粹的興趣。

本文的對話和句子來自Gossip Girl第二季第四集的第12到15分鐘。

1. Rufus: What brings you down here, Lily?

Rufus:哎呀，你怎麼來了

Lily: Oh, I just thought it would be nice to, um, to say hello, maybe catch up.

Lily:哦，我就想過來問聲好，敘敘舊什麼都。

Rufus: Actually I was on my way out.

Rufus: 太不巧了。我正要出門呢。

Lily: Of course. I should have called first. You’re busy with work and–

Lily: 沒關係。我應該先打個電話的。你要忙工作的，而且……

Rufus: No, I just…"Repo Man" is playing at the Sunshine. You know how I love my Harry Dean Stanton.

Rufus:：不是啦，Repo Man正在Sunshine上演呢。你知道我多麼喜歡我的Harry Dean Stanton。

Lily: Playing hooky?

Lily：翹班？

Rufus: Yeah, don’t tell anyone.

Rufus: 是啊，別跟人說。

1) What brings you down here

就是我們中文所說的“那陣風把你吹來了”，“今天怎麼有這雅興啊”，英文裏，爲了表示對來客的到來表示歡迎和驚喜，可以說“what a pleasant surprise”，相當於 “哎呀，你怎麼來啦！真沒想到會在這裏見到你。”

2) Catch up Catch up with someone的意思是“和某個有段時間沒見面的熟人見面，看看最近他們都做了些什麼”，差不多就是“聊聊天，敘敘舊”，我們可以體會一下，catch的原意是“追趕”，這裏由於你們很久沒見，對於對方發生什麼事情你很久沒了解了，這個時候爲了keep posted，你就要“迎頭趕上”去獲取對方的消息。而我們平時所說的I’ll catch up with you later 或者I will catch you later，可以用來替代I will see/talk to you later，也正是源於此。

Catch up on the news/gossip 的意思是 “獲知最新的消息”。我們平時所說的“補覺”則是“catch up on sleep”，在特定語境下，你只要說 “just go get some sleep”或者 “get some Z’s”，也差不多。

3) I should have called first. 這是虛擬語氣。不做詳解，造幾個例句讓你慢慢體會可能更好： 1. I should have killed that scumbag in the first play. (now he comes back to compromise my plan) 2. You shouldn’t have disclose our company’s secret to her last time. Now rumors spread all over the China branch. 3. I should have known she only cared about my money (obviously you are devastated and regret for not knowing that earlier).

4) Play hooky?

Play hooky (BrE play truant)是“翹課，逃課，曠工（翹班），不參加一些會議，活動”等意思。這裏指的是Dan的爸爸Rufus正事不幹溜走去看Repo。例句：I played hook today and did not go to work.

事實上，play hooky 還有“爽約（to not keep an appointment)”的意思。例句： I don’t want to see her today, ‘cause I look like ---- today. So I think I will just play hooky. I don’t have time for the sales meeting today, so I think I’ll just play hooky.

讀大學的時候曾經看過一部片子叫“翹課天才”，英文名叫“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ”，這裏day off的實際意思並不是指“逃課”，而是休息一天，不用去上班，可能是你今天輪休啊，或者今天放假啊，生病了啊。如果是請病假，還可以說take a sick leave, 請事假可是說take a casual leave 或者take a compassionate leave，如果是准假則是“be given a leave of absence”。

綜上所述，play hooky幾乎可以用於任何表示你不參加某活動的情況。對應的英式英語是play truant。說到play，突然想到了我們平時說上海杭州的女生很“俏皮”，英文對應的說法是“play hart-to-get”。什麼叫hard to get 呢？《肖申克的救贖》裏面，壞蛋想Andy給他BJ，Andy嚴詞拒絕，壞蛋說了句：hart to get，也就是“很難搞定”，“很難上”的意思。

從詞源上分析，俚語中，hook有depart hastily的意思（匆匆離開），比如：We’d better hook for home. 俚語中有 “hook it”則有“to run away, depart, flee”的意思，這個hook it也就等於play hooky。例句：He hooked it when he saw the truant officer.（查課員，通常來自可怕的教導處。）

而我們平時所說的 “逃課”，還可以說skip class，而如果是上課的時候偷偷從後面或者窗戶溜出去，則叫bunk off school。
