相信大家會在面試或者招聘會中看到招聘要求一般都標明應試者需要具備什麼樣的能力，我們也知道社會的發展需要各種各樣有能力的人，那麼什麼是能力呢？能詩會畫，能飲酒千杯不醉，能萬軍叢中取敵首級等等，都是能力。而且，很顯然從以上例子中可以看到能力的內容是由具體場合決定的，也就是說，能力只是一個模糊的定義，具體含義須看場景。這種漢語中的一詞多義，或者說抽象寓意的詞在英語中又是怎麼表達的呢？我們先來看一段Chinadaily的新聞：
China vows to defend islands
標題：中國發誓要捍衛島嶼主權
China and its armed forces have the "confidence, capability" and unwavering determination to defend the Diaoyu Islands, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.
中國國防部週三表示，中國政府和中國人民解放軍有“信心、能力”和堅定不移的決心，保護釣魚島。
A think-tank member visiting Beijing also warned that the frequent defense collaboration of the US-Japan alliance has strained the atmosphere of the Asia-Pacific region, and then weakened strategic mutual trust of the US-Japan-China trilateral ties is in "desperate need" of crisis management.
一名智囊團成員在訪問北京時警告說，美日聯盟頻繁的國防演習已經引起亞太地區周邊關係的緊張，也削弱了美日中三方在該地區處理危機的戰略互信。
上文中的capacity，就是能力，它的形容詞形式capable表示“有…能力的，能夠…的”，一般用於be capable of + n/doing something 表示能做到、能做某件事。
capacity [kə'pæsəti]
n.
1. ability to perform or produce
2. the susceptibility of something to a particular treatment
3. the amount that can be contained
從上面幾個選項中可以看到，capacity的主要含義有
1.能力；
2.承受力
3.容納量
與ability相比，capacity多了“容納”和“承受”的內容，因此含義更廣泛，而ability可以是指任意的能力類型，能表示更多的能力種類。比如capacity的第二項釋義就是‘承受的能力’，所以綜合來說，在表示抽象的“能力”時，雙方可互換。而早表示容納和承受的時候capacity最合適。
因此上段新聞中所說的capacity也可以用ability替換。
此外，capacity還有“酒量”的含義，
'4. tolerance for alcohol'：
he had drunk beyond his capacity.他喝酒過量了，或者說他已經不勝酒力了。
