第一段語法符號詳解：

複合句，該句中含有兩個主語從句. 第一個是 how…poison，該主語從句構成整句主系表結構的主語. 而在這個主語從句中，又有一個 that…poison 作第一個主語從句的主語，該主語從句為主謂賓結構，即 snakes manufactured poison.

複合句，主句為主謂賓結構，後面跟 that 引導的定語從句修飾 a poison，定語從句亦為主謂賓結構.
a mild, digestive juice like our own，整個是同位語成分，這裡對此進行了細分.

並列複合句，兩句以分號隔開，第一句為主謂賓結構，第二句為雙謂語，另有一個 as 引導的方式狀語從句，該從句為主謂結構.

並列句，兩句以分號隔開，第一句為主系表結構，第二句為主謂賓+賓補結構，with…effort 為方式狀語，後面 no more…bite 可以看作是 little effort 的同位語，具體描述一下有多輕鬆.
5. why snakes…
簡單句，該句有所省略，還原可為：Why do only snakes have poison.
6. Cats would be helped…
並列句，該句以分號分成兩部分，前一句為主謂結構，如果 helped 改為 helpful 則為主系表結構.
後句兩個 with 所帶為狀語，因主語仍為 cats；而破折號後面完整句子為 a bite is needed and no more effort is needed. 主語已與 cats 不同，屬於獨立主格結構，可以理解成狀語. (12.1.2)
7. it would be an assistance though…when…
複合句，該句主句為主系表結構，後面接一個 though 引導的讓步狀語從句，該從句亦為主系表結構，只不過在該從句中，還有一個 when 引導的時間狀語從句，主謂結構.

簡單句，主謂賓結構.
9. One wonders why Nature concocted poison.
複合句，主謂+賓語從句結構. why 引導的賓語從句為主謂賓結構. 此句表面是大自然調製的毒液，但 with 這個狀語表明，大自然是借蛇之口，調製出的毒液.
第二段語法符號詳解：
1. one might suppose that…process took place.
複合句，主謂+賓語從句結構. 從句本身為主謂結構.
2. It did not; some snakes manufactured a poison as different as…
並列複合句，以分號分開，首句為主謂結構. 第二句主句為主謂賓結構，後面為從句本身為主謂結構.
有三個結構修飾 a poison，其中第一個可改語序為(different from that of others) [in every respect]. 第二個修飾結構為 as different as 引導的方式狀語從句，從句本身是主系表結構. 第三個為現在分詞短語作後置定語，表示效果完全不同.
3. One poison acts on the nerves.
並列句，不過因為後句是省略句，劃分了成分. 如果是兩個完整的句子，則不能像本句一樣直接以逗號相連，須加 and 才可以. 還原為 one poison acts on the nerves, and the other acts on the blood.
第三段語法符號詳解：
1. The makers include…and their venom is called…
並列句，and 連線兩個句子，第一句為主謂賓結構，第二句為主謂+主語補語. We call their venom
2. Vipers and rattlesnakes manufacture the blood poison which…
複合句，主句為主謂賓結構，後有一個 which 引導的定語從句，該從句為被動語態的主謂+主語補語結構.
3. Both poisons are unpleasant, but the more unpleasant is the blood poison…
並列句，but 連線兩個句子，均為主系表結構.
4. It is said that…
複合句，實際主語為兩個 that 引導的主語從句. 兩個主語從句均為主系表結構.
so to speak 為 so to say 的變體.
5. the nerve poison does its business…
複合句，句首是一個倒裝的讓步狀語從句，還原為 as(此時應用 though) it may be that. 在 as 引導讓步狀語從句中，表語放在句首時，若主語是代詞，主謂不倒裝，但是必須把作表語的形容詞、名詞、動詞和副詞提到 as 前面. 所以文中仍為 it may，只是將 be that 提前.

並列句，前句為主謂賓結構，後句為主系表結構.
