We made it: the end of the year. Tonight, we’re positively encouraged to take ourselves apart so we can wake in the morning with groggy designs to reassemble for the better.

New Year Resolutions: renewal, reinvention, reform. University, with its few constraints and many opportunities, is the ideal time to attempt change and improvement.

While preferably all resolutions would amount to taking better advantage of every moment – a sentimental but not unworthy intention- below are the resolutions I’m most glad to have made, or those that, in hindsight, I should have made.

Get work experience

This is the priority. Underemployment is a disheartening plague: sixth formers are pushed into university, and university students are let go into a graduate job market that cannot take the numbers.

Once, employers asked for a degree or experience; now they demand both. It’s up to each student to use their degree to its full advantage: sadly, there is no longer an irrefutable corollary between qualification and employment. Work where you can – every job will provide some useful experience.

Do a little more work at university

Not to be a bore about it, but the biggest mistake any student can make is to not work hard enough. Skipping non-compulsory lectures can become a rather pleasing pastime, but what is missed now will not be covered in a series of catch up lectures-for-bluffers.

Get a handle on the January exams, then keep up the study. Don’t slack off. I once spent an afternoon exam watching a fly with an obvious Drink problem bounce and buzz between desks, wondering whether it knew more about property law than I did. It was hell.

Kick the procrastination

No one can stick to this, but just remember that tweeting about your work doesn’t count as doing it. 140-character wonderings may give you practice for crisp writing, but that only counts if you get anything useful down.
Don’t forget to be a student

Perhaps the most depressing news of late is that, compared to their parents, young people are more boring. Sorry – sensible. Young people are more sensible. Is this what progress looks like?

The Financial Times recently reported students drink less and study more, which is of course marvellous, but let’s not forget that university is an experience unlike any other. Work is the priority, but enjoy the freedom too.

I don’t condone anything in particular, but I will mention that hangovers don’t necessarily do much harm: Hemingway would stay up late with his drink, but always rose at six in the morning to write (standing up, incidentally).

Consider Francis Bacon, whose ‘Three Studies of Lucian Freud’ this year became the most expensive painting sold at auction, at $142 million. His habit? ‘I often like working with a hangover’ he said, ‘because my mind is crackling with energy and I can think clearly.’

The trick is maintaining moderation, or finding what you can handle: a tipple is fine, toppling is not. You wouldn’t want it to affect other pursuits – never risk the Porter’s warning in Hamlet: ‘[Drink] provokes and unprovokes. It provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance.’

Buy a calendar

Whether it’s online or in print, a calendar is a must. No more ‘Oops, just missed a seminar lol’ updates. Just write or type your obligations down – preferably somewhere you won’t forget.

Budget for emergencies

The moments money takes your guts and twists them with worry is when unexpected costs occur – when the laptop throws a hissy fit midway through an essay, resolves to hibernate permanently and you urgently need a replacement. Budget for your weekly spend and then put a little extra aside as often as possible. This makes big spends more manageable.

Remember it’s your degree, after all

Sorry for being saccharine: play an uplifting record of choice now. Remember it would be a waste of three (or more) years if you fitted in with people by pretending. Wasn’t there enough of that during school?

Pursue your own interests, find friends you actually like – and not just those you happen upon every day. How about finally attending one of the many societies you signed up for? The working world doesn’t afford even half the chances university does – take what you can and run with it.

Finally … eat more all-day breakfasts

For reasons I don’t accept or agree with, I’m not allowed to stroll out of my office whenever I like and seat myself elsewhere for an all-day fry up. Most businesses have similarly draconian policies. Have as many as you can while you are a student: they are an uncelebrated joy you will miss once your rights to them are revoked.
