In the Western Jin Dynasty there were two young men. One of them was Zu Ti and the other was Liu Kun. Both of them were men of ideals and integrity who were chivalrous and of asanguine disposition. They not only wrote excellent articles but also were fond of practising martial arts to keep fit, in order to render meritorious service to the country. Both of them were chief clerks responsible for document administration in Luoyang. Although in appearance the Jin Dynasty had jurisdiction of the Central Plains comprising the middle and lower reaches of the Haunch and threatened by foreign invasion. Zu Ti and Liu Kun often talked about the country's situation till late into the night, and each time they talking very excitedly again.

Liu Kun fell asleep without knowing it, but Zu Ti was too excited to fall asleep. "Cock-a-doodle-doo," came the crow of rooster in the wasteland. Zu Ti jumped up and kicked Liu Kun awake: "Listen. How inspiring the rooster's crow is. Let's get up and practised on a slope." From then on, they kept practising sword playing vigorously and energetically in the wasteland every day when they heard the first crow in the morning.

Deeply moved by Zu Ti's patriotic passion, Liu Kun was determined to devote himself to his homeland. Once he wrote to his family: "At the time when the country is in dire peril, I am resolved to dedicate myselt to the service of my country. I often fear that I might lag behind Zu Ti in rendering service to the country, and, in fact, I am behind him..."

The words "sleep with my head pillowed on a spear, waiting for the day to break" vividlydescribed Liu Kun's determination to dedicate himself to the service of the country and to fight the enemy at any time. Later, this set phrase is used to mean maintaining sharp vigilance and being ready to fight at any time."

One day, when Houyi was out, Chang'e secretly swallowed the potion(一劑) in the hope that she would become immortal. The result was quite unexpected: she felt herself becoming light, so light that she flew up in spite of herself, drifting and floating in the air, until she reached the palace of the moon.

She is regarded by later generations as the goddess of the moon.

This beautiful story has always been liked by the Chinese and provides a favourite allusion(暗示) for poets and writers.

Chairman Mao Zedong's poem in memory of his martyred(有犧牲精神的) wife Yang Kaihui has these well - known lines:

The lonely moon goddess spreads her ample sleeves

To dance for these loyal souls in infinite space.

Here, in the Chinese original, the name Chang'e is used instead of "moon goddess".

The figure of Chang'e, a beauty dressed in the elegant garments of a bygone(過去的) age floating towards the moon, naturally supplies unending inspiration for painters and sculptors.

Li Ling was a great general during the time of emperor Han Wu-di. He was a very good fighter, and he won every battle.

One time, however, Li Ling's troops were so hopelessly outnumbered by the Huns that although they fought bravely, the whole army was soon taken captive.

Li Ling shamefully surrendered for the moment, planning to wait for an opportunity to strike back.

But when news of the surrender reached the capital, the emperor's jealous ministers began to degrade Li Ling in front of the emperor.

What he heard made the emperor so angry that he had Li Ling's wife and mother put to death.

Ze-ma Chian, who had always respected Li Ling, believed that he wouldn't surrender without a reason, and urged the emperor not to believe rumors.

This time, the emperor grew angry at Sz-ma Chian, and locking him up, punished himseverely.

Sz-ma Chian then wrote a long letter to a friend, saying, "I am now in the middle of writing a history book. If I die, it will be as if one ox in a group on nine were to lose a single hair. I am willing to withstand punishment in order to complete this book." Sz-ma Chian finally did finish his book - the very famous Shr-Ji.
