Chinese authorities said on Sunday that it is baseless speculation to say that an "ultimatum" had been given to force relatives of those who died in a fatal high-speed train crash in east China to agree to accept government compensation.

週日中國政府表示，鐵道部向動車事故遇難者家屬下達“最後通牒”、強迫其接受政府賠償一事純屬子虛烏有。

文中的ultimatum一詞即爲“最後通牒”的意思，源於拉丁語，指談判破裂前“最後的話”。在diplomatic negotiation（外交談判）破裂前，一般一國會就某個問題用書面通知對方，限定在一定時間內接受其條件，否則就採取某種coercive measures（強制措施），比如threat of force（武力威脅），economic blockade（經濟封鎖），sever diplomatic relations（斷絕邦交）等等。

Ultimatum如今已不限於外交領域，日常生活和商務往來中也時常會用到這個詞，而且一般都以dispatch/deliver/give an ultimatum to…的形式出現。例如：He gave his daughter an ultimatum: unless she stopped taking drugs he would throw her out of the house.（他給女兒下了最後通牒：她要是不戒毒，就把她從家裏趕出去。）
