愛爾蘭香農(Shannon)河畔Banaghe鎮是19世紀中期一個臭名昭著的"口袋選區"（pocket borough)，當地大多數居民受僱於某個家族， 因而選舉也完全受其控制。當時在英國國會裏一有人提及此類"口袋選區"，議員們就俏皮地說，"Well，that beats/bangs Banagher. " 意思是"真了不起，令人驚異"。人們認爲約於1880年出現的beat the band 一語由that beats Banagher演化而來不是沒有理由的,兩者都用了英語中慣用的頭韻法,且beat the band念起來更順口，它的原意是"壓過樂隊的 聲響"，轉義爲"了不起，令人驚異";作狀語用時則表示"又快又猛地，起勁地"。
