Despite dads often being the main bread-winner in a household, just 1 per cent of Britons plan to spend the most money on their fathers this Christmas, according to a survey into family buying habits by supermarket Sainsbury’s.

Sisters do not fare much better, with only 2 per cent of people saying they will spend the most on their sister this Christmas.

A poll of 1,500 customers by the supermarket found that daughters are more popular than sons. Around 12 per cent of people said that they will spend the most on their daughter, while 10 per cent said they will spend the most on their son.

Partners and spouses are the most spoiled. Almost one in four people said they will spend the most on their partner this Christmas.

Other research suggests that consumers will be looking to save money this year by making their own presents.

With just 15 shopping days to go until Christmas, B&Q, the DIY chain, found that a quarter of all shoppers are making their own cards, presents or decorations this year.

Cash will also feature strongly this Christmas. More than half of Britons are planning to give cash as a present this year, the Payments Council has found. It expects a total of ?2.4 billion in cash will be given over the festive period.

In a poll of over 2,000 people it found that over-55s are the most generous. Almost two-thirds of this age group said that they will give financial gifts worth ?116 on average, more than double the amount that 18-to-34 year olds plan to give.
