Dear Sir/ Madam,

I’ve just learned that Shanghai museum will hold a famous painting exhibition and you’re responsible for collecting public suggestions about the best location to hold it. I’m writing this letter to share with you my opinions. As far as I’m concerned, it is more reasonable to hold thepainting exhibition in Shanghai Museum than in community libraries. My reasons are as follows.

On the one hand, it is more convenient for people to reach Shanghai Museum, located in the center of the city. Visitors can go there by subway,by bus and so on. What’s more, Shanghai Museum is much more extensive than community libraries, providing visitors with a more comfortable environmentto appreciate the famous paintings.

On the other hand, Shanghai Museum, a well-known and distinguished museum both at home and abroad, is more professional in holding paintingexhibitions. What’s of great significance is that not only does it provide advanced facilities and high-tech monitors but also offers professional security guards to protect those famous paintings from being damaged or stolen in the process of exhibition.

Consequently, I strongly propose that the painting exhibition is to be held in the Shanghai Museum.

Yours,

Wang Min

Dear Sir,

I have heard that weneed to choose a picture as a post for the coming reading festival, and as astudent, I am writing to offer my suggestion. Among the following threepictures, I would choose the second one, in which three students gather arounda table, enjoying a heated discussion with some drinks。

The reason why Ichoose the second picture is, firstly, that the reading festival is initiallymeant for students, so the images in the picture vividly show what kind ofactivities students would take part in during the festival. Secondly, thepicture demonstrates that group discussion, an important reading pattern thecommittee always calls for, will be put into practice during the festival thisyear. This reading pattern, I believe, would attract more students. Lastly, asreading festival offers a good chance for students to get acquainted withdifferent friends, this picture correctly conveys the purpose of the festivalthat you are making friends while you are reading。

In conclusion, I thinkthe second picture could best convey the purpose as well as the function of thereading festival and I sincerely hope that my suggestion can be of great helpfor your decision。

Yours,

Pan Yangyang

Dear Sir/Madam,

As an avid reader of your newspaper, I'd like to offer some suggestions for changes that hopefully could be made to your future editions. A section that I think you can do without would be Culture and, in the meantime, a section that I suggest adding to the newspaper is Career Planning. My reasons are as follows.

Since this newspaper is intended for students, a relaxed tone and light-hearted topics would get in good graces with us. Culture seems a rather serious section, which isn't really necessary considering our school curriculum has done an excellent job imparting to us gems of various cultures in the world. Besides, culture and entertainment are inextricably linked—that is, we can subliminally learn about western culture through listening to English songs and watching American or British TV series. For example, Big Bang Theory has shown us how Americans now regard "smart is the new sexy," and Sherlock has shown us how the wry humor of Brits can actually strengthen the bond between two detectives.

The reason why I'd like to see a Career Planning section is that high schools in Shanghai seldom offer career guidance, something that should be made indispensable to the curriculums. Employers often complain about graduates' lack of skill and, more importantly, mental preparedness to do things professionally. I think that it's part of a school's responsibility to help students build links between academic subjects and employable skills. These are not mutually exclusive entities, but rather a mutually dependent whole. Book knowledge bolsters our qualifications and confidence necessary for a successful career, while proper career planning will be beneficial in directing our limited time and energy to what really matters to us personally. Better still, it would be fantastic to read about other people's reflections on job seeking and career development.

It is time we made the newspaper breezier to its readers and incorporated some practical tips on finding work and building a career.

Many thanks

Chen Fei

Dear Haiqing,

I hear you are very unhappy these days because your parents can’t afford to buy you some brand-name shoes and garments you like very much. And I write you this letter to share with you what I think about this matter.

To begin with, beauty is just skin deep. Don’t you think it silly to pay so much attention to your appearance? He is a shallow person who judges others by their appearance; in the same sense, he is a shallow person who thinks that a brand-name garment can add to his glamour. So please, just forget about those brand-name things. What really matters is not whether you wear brand-name shoes or garments but whether your clothes fit you. As a student, you have to wear the school uniform on the weekdays and to be honest, you look very smart in it. Then why do you have to bother to buy the expensive brand-name things?

Secondly, I know your parents are both average workers. Hard as they work, they don’t earn much. Despite this, they do their best to give you a lot of things on demand. Look at the callus on their hands and wrinkles on their faces, how can you have the heart to ask for more than they can afford, which will surely break their hearts? Remember, parents don’t owe us expensive summer camps; they don’t owe us Sony Walkman; nor do they owe us Nike shoes, If you really want those fancy things, you should take a part-time job to contribute to their purchase rather than ask your parents for money to add to their already heavy burden. Don’t you think so?

Thirdly, we have such a wide variety of things available these days which are both nice and inexpensive. What’s the point of paying much more for those brand-name things that are not much better? My friend, take my advice, and you’ll be a wiser consumer as well as a more considerate child to your parents.

Poverty, sometimes, is a good thing. It can test a person’s character and it makes a man out of a boy faster than anything else. Keep working hard, and you are bound to be able to afford those things in the near future. Now you may as well focus on your study. Anyway, wouldn’t it be funny for a would-be achiever to be so preoccupied with brand-name things all day long?

Keep in touch.

Yours

Huangping
