近來各類關於大陸游客赴臺個人遊的消息“滿天飛”，在可能首批開放的幾個城市—北京、上海、廈門，5月中旬至今，相關旅行社的諮詢電話都被打“爆”了。

Tourists from selected cities on the Chinese mainland will be able to travel across the Taiwan Straits as individual tourists by the end of June, said a senior mainland negotiator on Wednesday.
中國大陸方面的一位官員本週三表示，6月底，來自中國大陸首批開放的幾個城市的遊客就可以赴臺個人遊了。
文中的travel across the Taiwan Straits as individual tourists就是指“赴臺個人遊/自由行”，也稱爲visit Taiwan as individuals。“自由行”也稱爲self-guided tour，指出外旅行不參加旅遊團，是與package tour（跟團旅遊）相對而言的，在臺灣俗稱“機加酒”，即機票加酒店。自由行遊客也就是individual tourist或者free walker。長途自助旅行的人還可以稱爲backpacker（揹包客）。
旅行社一般開展的是sightseeing routes（觀光路線），每個旅行團都會有tour guide（導遊）和tour escort（領隊）陪同，到了旅遊目的地還會有local guide（地陪）做嚮導。
